Golf Course Update | February 19

Dear Stonebriar Members,

We would like to extend a fond farewell to James Stulsas, Fazio Course Superintendent. James has accepted the Director of Golf Course Maintenance position at Walnut Creek Country Club. His hard work and dedication to Stonebriar are appreciated, and we wish James all the best as he begins the next chapter in his career.

Stonebriar is proud to announce the new Fazio Course Superintendent, Scott Wakely.
He will officially transition into the Fazio Superintendent role on February 25, 2026.

Scott brings a strong foundation in golf operations, turf management, and team leadership to his role as Golf Course Superintendent. Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Scott attended Bridgewater College in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where he majored in Business Administration and competed as a collegiate golfer. His passion for the game naturally evolved into a career within the golf industry.

Before transitioning into agronomy, Scott spent nine years as an Assistant Golf Professional, including time at Ferncroft Country Club in Middleton, Massachusetts. His experience on the professional side of golf gave him unique insight into course presentation, player expectations, and the importance of exceptional daily conditioning.

Scott joined Stonebriar in May 2024 and quickly proved himself an invaluable part of the maintenance team. His dedication and leadership led to his promotion to Dye Course Assistant Superintendent in October 2024. In this role, he has contributed to elevating course standards, overseeing daily operations, and supporting long-term agronomic planning.

Outside of work, Scott enjoys spending time outdoors with his wife, Kristen, whom he married in January 2026, and taking their dog to the lake. His blend of professional experience, passion for the game, and commitment to excellence continues to drive his contributions to Stonebriar’s success.

The Agronomy Team has been working hard to prepare the courses for the freezing weather. All greens are covered, and several are double-covered. Greens that are not double-covered have added protection from mulch in areas that have proven susceptible to cold weather damage.      The weather forecast continues to change. This is nothing new for Texas. It also shows how difficult it can be for management to plan the opening of the golf courses. While we want to provide access, we prioritize protecting the golf course. Currently, the forecast for Saturday morning is low at 24 degrees. This temperature can cause injury to our Miniverde greens if exposed. We communicated the plan to uncover it on Friday and open it on Saturday. Dye Course Update - August 24, 2025

  Dye Course Update | August 24 Dear Stonebriar Members, The Agronomy Team kicked off this aerification closure with great food and camaraderie. Club Manager, Chris Marioni, coordinated a taco truck to feed the team. The food was excellent, and it was a welcome break from the summer grind. A special “Thank You” to Chris for doing this for our Agronomy Team. The Dye Course aerification closure has been very productive. We received 0.25” of rain, which caused a minor setback, but we were able to get back on schedule. The greens are healing quickly and look great. They were aerified with 5/8” side eject tines, the largest coring tines we use at Stonebriar. Cores were removed at a 2” x 2” spacing, which calculates to 7.67% of the putting surface affected. In our three core aerifications in 2025, we have affected 17.49% of the putting surfaces. Theoretically, we are replacing the top 3.5” of the green's soil profile every 5.7 years.     We are following the same aerification s...

Golf Course Update - August 30, 2024

No more core aerifications for 2024! The GCM team has completed another successful aerification on the Dye Course. Typically, I would show pictures. We all know what holes in greens look like by now. This update will breakdown the numbers of aerification and give a little more insight into why we are aggressive with our cultural practices. As you have likely heard before, the most important part of turf is what is underneath it. The soil must be managed properly have produce the desired playing conditions. There are numerous variables that affect soils, but we will only discuss a few in this update. Displacement This chart shows the displacement calculations. Displacement refers to the percentage of material removed. In this case, we are specifically discussing the total percentage of surface area affected.
