Dear Stonebriar Members, Meteorological spring has certainly made its presence known in North Texas. Since March 1st, we’ve received nearly 3 inches of rainfall, with one minor flooding event. Our team responded quickly—removing debris and restoring bunkers within two days. These tasks are entirely manual, relying on rakes, shovels, and a lot of labor. With a wet spring likely ahead, please know that our team is working diligently to return the golf courses to top condition after each rain event.
Greens: Verticutting & Topdressing As temperatures rise and the turf begins to grow, we’ve initiated our mechanical cultural practices. On Monday, we utilized the closed day to complete our first verticut of the season. This process is essential for maintaining high quality putting surfaces throughout the growing months. Benefits of Verticutting & Topdressing - Improved turf density & reduced thatch, encouraging upright, uniform leaf growth.
Enhanced smoothness, firmness, and ball roll as sand fills the grooves created by the verticutting, leveling minor surface imperfections.
Weather permitting, we will perform this practice weekly. Some weeks will be more noticeable than others depending on how aggressively the greens need to be treated. Labor & Process For one course, this operation requires 48 total manhours. The sequence includes: - Verticutting in two directions
- Mowing in two directions
- Topdressing
- Hand brushing sand into the canopy
This combination sets the foundation for smooth, consistent putting conditions as we move into peak season. Growth Regulators With the greens actively growing again, we have resumed our plant growth regulator program. This helps maintain consistent green speeds throughout the day, reduces scalping as the turf becomes denser, and improves overall turf health and stress tolerance. It’s a key component in delivering predictable, high quality playing conditions. Mow Line Adjustments Over the next several weeks, you’ll notice adjustments to mow lines across all low mow areas—tees, fairways, approaches, collars, and aprons. We are beginning with the Fazio fairways. Over time, mowing patterns naturally drift. Our goal is to restore the intended design features, particularly by bringing fairway lines closer to bunkers where appropriate. Operators will follow white dashed paint lines as we refine these adjustments. Expect a few iterations before we finalize the new lines. For example, the left side of Fazio #2 has been scalped down to establish the new fairway edge. As the bermudagrass continues to emerge from dormancy, this area will green up and blend seamlessly into the fairway.
Grass Range Tee Rotation We are currently on the grass tee three days each week. Weather permitting, the days on grass will be Friday, Saturday, and a rotating weekday. For example, this week (weather permitting) we will be on grass Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Next week will be Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday. Once the bermuda is actively growing enough to recover divots, we will increase to four days on grass each week. |
