 Fazio Course Aerification Update 7.10.2025

Fazio aerification week has been a huge success. We were able to complete aerifcation and verticutting on all short grass areas. Luckily, the rain stayed away. Aerification week is very labor intensive. Without the closure, these cultivation practices would not be possible

Here is a snapshot of our 4-day closure itinerary:

Monday – Tuesday

·       Core aerify greens (1/2” side eject tines)

·       Topdress greens to fill holes

·       Roll greens

·       Verticut greens two directions

·       Apply granular fertilizer

·       Core aerify fairways (3/4” hollow tines)

·       Roll fairways

·       Verticut fairways

·       Circle mow fairways

Wednesday

·       Roll greens

·       Circle mow fairways

·       Mow tees

·       Core aerify collars & approaches

Thursday

·       Mow & roll greens

·       Verticut tees

·       Circle mow tees

·       Continue fairway clean up

·       Apply fertilizer, wetting agent, growth regulator on tees & fairways

·       Prepare golf course for Friday opening

 

Fazio Course Expectations

Greens

·       Greens should be recovered in 7-10 days. We will continue to roll greens daily for smoothness as they heal from aerification.

·       Green speeds will begin to increase around the 7-8 day timeframe.

Tees & Fairways

·       There will be some areas that remain off color for approximately 10 days. We were very aggressive with the verticutting which will provide a tighter and firmer surface.

·       Wetting agents and fertilizers were applied to encourage consistent moisture and a quick recovery.

 

Summer Traffic Control

Beginning next week, we will begin rotating our “Cart Path Only” holes to relieve traffic stress on fairways. Par 3 holes will remain CPO. As we rotate the CPO, some holes will be CPO longer than others. This depends on the number of entry and exit points we have on those holes. Excluding the par 3 holes, we will only have 3 holes CPO at a time. Obviously, if weather dictates moving to CPO, we will follow our normal CPO procedures.

 

Practice Range Tee

The range tee has performed well this summer. Our tee gets a lot of usage, especially through Member Tournament Season. We will be going to mats only for 3 weeks in August to allow full recovery before September tournament season begins. During this time, we will aerify, verticut, and topdress the tee. The “Mats Only” period will allow us time to provide range tee conditions that everyone can enjoy throughout the golfing season.

The Agronomy Team has been working hard to prepare the courses for the freezing weather. All greens are covered, and several are double-covered. Greens that are not double-covered have added protection from mulch in areas that have proven susceptible to cold weather damage.      The weather forecast continues to change. This is nothing new for Texas. It also shows how difficult it can be for management to plan the opening of the golf courses. While we want to provide access, we prioritize protecting the golf course. Currently, the forecast for Saturday morning is low at 24 degrees. This temperature can cause injury to our Miniverde greens if exposed. We communicated the plan to uncover it on Friday and open it on Saturday. Preparing golf courses for winter always impacts playing conditions, but the transition from fall to winter is a reality that golfers and golf course management must face. Remember that having a great spring depends on getting the course through winter in the best shape possible.   Please help us provide the best winter playing conditions by:    Keep carts on paths as much as possible   Filling your divots and repairing ball marks (yours plus one!)   Rake bunkers and always enter / exit at the lowest point closest to your ball   Avoid high traffic and wet areas when carts are allowed off paths   Be careful with the flagstick – it can be damaging to the green, especially the cup   Greens Raising mowing heights on greens will affect putting on some days. No more core aerifications for 2024! The GCM team has completed another successful aerification on the Dye Course. Typically, I would show pictures. We all know what holes in greens look like by now. This update will breakdown the numbers of aerification and give a little more insight into why we are aggressive with our cultural practices. As you have likely heard before, the most important part of turf is what is underneath it. The soil must be managed properly have produce the desired playing conditions. There are numerous variables that affect soils, but we will only discuss a few in this update. Displacement This chart shows the displacement calculations.
